    Mostly fertilize once a month during growing season and water only the other times is what I think is right…

    Depending on the plant. For my self-watering pots, I dilute fertilizer to less than 1/4 potency every time so that it’s slowly absorbed. Some plants that say to fertilize don’t even like it (my darn “lucky” bamboo), so I just skip it.

    I do as well, similar to SJ, except I don’t use self-watering pots. Read the instructions of your fertilizer. I use SuperThrive foliage pro (~1/4 tsp per gallon water which is a diluted mix for maintenance) with each watering for my tropical plants and a succulent fertilizer for my succulents. What I’ve learned is, if my plant is growing and producing new foliage, and getting sufficient light to thrive, then I will give it fertilizer.

    I decided to try micro dosing this year as some plants can get fertilizer shock. Its going great. Instead of full strngth i just add small amounts to the water cans when i fill them. So far the plants are responding good. Lots of new growth.
