What do you guys do with roots that are coming out of the bottom of your pot but you don’t want to upsize? My polka dot plant is getting really long roots!

    You can cut off up to 1/3 of the root ball, add some new soil to the bottom of the pot and then put the plant back in (there’s lots of good youtube videos to check out to get an idea of what that looks like). Every plant reacts differently, so if its your first time doing this I suggest cutting less, watching how your plant reacts, and then increasing/decreasing the amount you take off next time you’re at this point. When it comes to upsizing/repotting (etc.) a good rule of thumb is root to soil ratio. 50% roots to soil is a good time to upsize for most plants (there are always exceptions +/- to this). Yours looks like it’s getting close. However, other signs you want to look for are new growth is getting smaller, older leaves are yellowing at an increased rate, lack of water retention. If yours is happy and healthy above the surface, I would monitor it, and make a change when I start to see one of the other signs.

      Ok thank you. I’ve never cut a root ball before, good to know I can take a bit off and keep it in its same pot. It’s currently in a 6” pot and I can’t see it going up in size! It’s a polka dot plant that love to stretch like crazy; surprising to know it’s not just above the soil like that it loves growing!

    I agree, I remove up to 1/3 of the bottom/side portion of roots and repot in the same pot. Sprinkle in some Mycorrhizal to help with shock.
