Would love any pro tips anyone can offer a ficus elastica newbie. Just got her for $7 at my pet store š couldnāt pass her up. Thanks in advance! (Sheās got multiple names in her ID because I havenāt picked one for her yet)

LindseyTheyāre toxic to pets, so itās kind of ironic you got it from a pet store š sheās a cutie though! I like to chop the top off mine when theyāre small to encourage branching, because they get top heavy and topple easily if you let them grow as one long stem.

Theyāre toxic to dogs, from my knowledge, but I believe theyāre safe for other animals like reptiles, thus the section for plants in their enclosures. I thought that was funny too, though. But hey, if theyāre not safe for them either, then Iām saving an animal too. Totally didnāt just go in there for a plant š

I did this a few weeks ago and started seeing some new growth. But I will warn you, sometimes they just grow one āarmā instead of 2 š¤£

And thanks for the tip! Thatās good to know! They get their plants from a local nursery, but they really have no clue what theyāre doing once they buy them. I found the plants at the front entrance with the reptile enclosures in a POOL (so the employees donāt have to water them often, Iām guessing). And the plants were all in soaking wet soil. Itās a miracle they havenāt attracted anything more than garden spiders from my viewing. Iām actually planning on applying for a job there, 1. To save the plants, 2. To save the PETS from the plants. And 3. I know too much about animals and plants for my own good and it wouldnāt hurt to be paid for itā¦and get an employee discount š

Np! Iāve had mine for about a year now. Heās pretty easy. He just finished his āsentenceā living in my work cubicle, and got to come home. Heās been under a grow light and overhead LEDs this whole time. Iāve heard a few people say their ficus tineke doesnāt grow at all until it gets adjusted, so donāt be alarmed if that happens!

š love the āsentenceā joke. I recently gave my cousin an aglaonema that was doing fantastic at my house, and now itās not doing so hot since she moved it to her office. And good to know. I heard they can be a little finicky at first with some and slow growers, so Iāll try not to stress. š®āšØ
