Any tips for prepping houseplants for a three week absence with no reliable plant sitter options? Can i just water everything well right before I leave and maybe use some self-watering options for the ones that don’t like to dry out? Last time I had to be away I thought I had someone reliable but turned out not to be. I lost a few and am still trying to revive a couple (months later).
I went away for two and a half weeks last year and when I returned my plants were much better than I thought they would be - they were a little sad, but only just a handful were desperate for watering. I did a variety of things, all after I throughly watered the plants. Admittedly I did all of these at the beginning of last summer so they had that going for them and I transitioned them to their vacation home outside on my deck, that perks them right up too. 1. I had a couple plastic storage bins where I placed a towel/rag on the bottom and then added just enough water to saturate the towels and then placed each bin a few feet away from a window and filled the container with the plants (in nursery pots, no cover pots). 2. Used the water globes in my larger plants. 3. Put smaller plants in ziplock baggies near the windows. This creates humidity and kept them happy. I’ve seen folks use irrigation systems, either with a string that wicks water into each plant or the fancy tube systems that are programmed, those seem to be good options too.
