I just got this little goober, any tips on how to take care of him? I have never owned any carnivorous plants before and know this is a stretch in my ability to keep plants alive. I know they like rainwater/distilled water, need tons of humidity and lots of light. Anything helps!
(Almost) complete guide to a basic carnivorous plant: SPHAGNUM MOSS, I like to use long fiber sphagnum moss (very important that there’s no potting mix) and perlite (natural perlite, no additives). No fertilizers needed, the plant gets his nutrients from the bugs he eats. It’s ok if it dies, I’ve already had two of those and they didn’t make it. They’re a little bit tougher to take care of. When starting with carnivorous plants, I would start with a Nepenthes (I have a Nepenthes ventrata), which is a pitcher plant. If the plant digests a particularly large meal, it’s normal for the “mouth” to turn black as he absorbs all the nutrients from the victim he caught. Once the pitcher is completely black, I recommend cutting it off, but you can leave it to fall off on its own. They go into a winter dormancy period, so take off all the sphagnum moss and things from the roots (the roots of a Venus flytrap are normally black, this is a common trait, don’t worry), you can put him into a ziplock bag and shove him in the freezer. Come spring, take him back out and chop (or leave, your preference) all black or dead “mouths” and leaves. It will take about a week to a month for the flytrap to get his mouths ready again to catch bugs. Good luck with your first carnivorous plant!! :D

2개 좋아요 Some really tiny Venus flytraps’ mouths are too tiny to have any hairs yet, however yours seems big enough, so I wouldn’t worry about that.
