My son was gifted a Venus Fly Trap for Christmas. Within that time frame we’ve come to really love this little guy. We are both first time owners and are going at this with as much google research as possible. A couple of questions. It is in a grow pod and the light is on for atleast 12 hours a day. It has distilled water, the proper soil (I believe) and had its first round of insects around Christmas time. The traps closed immediately on the insects but have since opened and have clearly not fully absorbed them. 1) Why haven’t the traps fully absorbed the insects and do I just leave it like that? 2) Some traps, not all, are turning brown and rotting. I’ve already pruned one trap off that seemingly browned and rotted overnight a week ago. A new browning/rotting trap appeared within the last few days. Why is this happening? New traps are sprouting so I can’t imagine the entire plant is sick and some traps are fully okay.

    Quick question did you guys repot it or is it in the same pot as it was purchased in? Only reason I am asking is because these guys often come with their roots wrapped in a “cloth” like material and you’re gonna wanna unwrap them to help the roots breath

    And is it sitting in water? These guy love to sit in water under their nursery pop. But No faucet water

    Also are you giving them live insects? The traps need to be stimulated enough to produce the enzymes to fully break down the bugs?

      It had live insects, snapped closed on all of them, and now has slowly reopening with the insects still inside the trap.

      Make sure to take the already dead/digested bugs out as. Once they open back up they are basically “done eating” you can use small twizzers or a good pressured spray bottle

    The traps won't fully "eat" the entire bug, a bit of remains left after they open again is normal. Just gently remove it without stimulating the tap too much. It's also normal for the traps to die off after they've been stimulated a certain amount of times, each trap won't last forever. Just trim off the brown ones as it will use any green to continue to photosynthesyse even if it looks like the trap is actively dying off.
