So I got a Venus fly trap like 3 weeks ago. I’m about to give up on this one and go get another one unless there’s something I can do to help it. I bought it because I’ve never had one and I always wanted it figured it was like almost every other plant so I brought it home. Started doing research on it and turns out it’s a very advanced plant. I took it out of that terrible pot. It comes in trimmed off all the dead ones inspected it repotted it in a Pete Moss soil. I’ve been keeping it consistently moist and then I found out it’s a bog plant. Meaning have it sitting in a little tray of water so I’ve been doing that using distilled water no fertilizer and it’s still dying so then I found out it has to have direct sunlight which I don’t have anywhere to put it for direct sunlight so I have it under a grow light. Do I have to feed it bugs? I’m honestly very confused of this plant because everything I’m reading is mixed. Is there anything I can do or should I just go buy a new one and restart, knowing the things that I know now and is there anything else I need to know? Also is this “food” good for them where I live in Michigan in winter time is next to impossible to either order live food or pick it up from the store(shipping delays due to cold) Or can I use dried mealworms? Adding a picture of what it looks like now and a description of what type of grow light I have

    I took in my friend's because it was dying and she just didnt know how to care for it. From what I've learned : distilled or rainwater only. Only feed bugs from June-Oct as they go into a hibernation state during fall and winter. For winter months, grow light for only 4-6 hrs a day. During spring and summer grow light for 12-16 hrs a day. When you first get it AND during hibernation they can turn black and brown, making them look dead but they are actually fine. Keep watering on schedule. The roots are likely still thriving. Hope this helps! Im somewhat new to this also so just trying to maybe help where I can 🧡

    Forgot to mention... not sure what soil you have it in but mix in some sphagnum moss or just do sphagnum moss or carnivorous soil mix. That may help also.

      I have it in Pete Moss and Pearl light and it’s a bog plant so I have it in a tray filled of distilled water

    That should be good. Just give it time. The first 6-8 weeks it can look dead. Along with if it's cold in your area, that can affect it. It's adjusting to the new environment so just get on a schedule with watering and keep that up. That'll help it adjust better. I wouldnt give up on it yet.

      Yeah, half of it’s black and the other half is still green. So I’m guessing it’s in its winter months lol. So I’m just gonna keep a tray filled with distilled water and see how it’s looking in the summer months and if it doesn’t bounce back, I’m gonna get a different one now that I know more about the plant I normally do research before buying any plant, but I’ve been wanting one of these for a long time and I impulsively bought it

      Growlight and time! I don’t think feeding them non-alive things works because their traps won’t stay closed if they don’t sense movement.

    Totally get it! I've never had one either but my friend was like please come get this before I kill it. So I did because I've also always wanted one. Hope yours does well. I havent had mine long so we'll see I suppose.

    From my research feed it once a week. I just got my venus fly trap 2 weeks ago and still learning about her so far she is getting food on her own. I also heard ants are a good source to feed. You can have an ant farm during the winter season as food supply ?
