Hi. I’m new to these plants but love them. My pitcher plant is not producing pitchers like it was. They get these little brown nubs that 3 weeks later don’t change. Cut them off? It’s growing but I think it needs more light. We have rainstorms every afternoon so I can’t put it outside because it would get overwatered, right? I use distilled water. I have a small one as well that’s not doing much. I bought a cheap grow light on Amazon and don’t know if I should use it. Their description: 80W Tri Head Timing 80 LED 9 Dimmable Levels Plant Grow Lights (plants in light pic not mine)

    you could water it everyday and it would be just fine - these guys are bog plants, and need constant moisture to stay happy. you could also try more light, as they like at least 6 hrs of direct light a day! theres an awesome website that has some really informitive info pages! google growcarnivorousplants.com, or sarrecenia northwest :) hope this helps, good luck!!

      Wait that’s not true! It is true for other carnivorous plants like Venus fly traps, but pitcher plants are epiphytes, meaning they grow in trees, so they are NOT sitting in water. They need to dry out

      They are not bog plants. Nepenthes are epiphytic like orchids. They do need 10 hours of light 3-4 should be direct if possible. They should not be watered like a sarracenia. They will get root rot.

    Not to disagree with the other commenter, but more to clear up a common misconception, Nepenthes/tropical pitchers are actually one of the few carnivores that *aren’t* bog plants. While they do appreciate consistent watering, that means something more like weekly watering, and they shouldn’t be constantly in water (so to answer your question, you’re right I wouldn’t constantly leave them in rain). To the other point though, 90% of the time, stunted growth on Nepenthes means insufficient light. If you already have them in a window that gets good light earlier in the day (minimum 3-4 hours bright light) then a grow light later in the day would be a great idea. Typically, a window with good morning/afternoon light is bright enough for the rest of the day, but if you’re having constant rain/cloudy weather, it’s probably lacking. Hope this helps!

      As long as the plant is getting good natural light earlier, I think this should work as a supplemental light for later in the day. I probably wouldn’t recommend it if you were using it as your sole light source. If that were the case, most commonly T5 grow lights are recommended, but that’s usually only in environments like terrariums. Give the one you have a go, and if you still go a couple weeks without new pitchers, maybe look into if you have a brighter window area or a better light.

    Yes they need more light. In my experience LED like that is not strong enough. It’s best to get the full spectrum sansis if you’re going to buy off Amazon. I do suggest using a grow light though better light will help pitchers. They should be adapted to your ambient humidity. What substrate are they planted in? Don’t cut them off they may develope into pitchers. I wouldn’t change their environment by taking them in and outside.
