Hey just got a Venus fly trap! Its “mouth” is always closed and never opens. Why is it like that? Any tips other than keeping it moist, lots of light and not tap water? TIA!

    It may have been triggered in the store. Or it may have caught something in the store. These should always be in a water tray, constantly moist, 1/2-2/3 up the side of the pot. Using distilled, R/O or Rain water. Tap or spring water is toxic to them.

    Don’t forget they need to be put in the fridge (or left outside if it’s below 40 in the winter where you live). They need a hard freeze so definitely look that up sometime this fall so you can be prepared for it! Also fair warning, these guys are really tough to keep alive. Good luck!

    A possible repotting? Plant looks like it’s doing good and may need more room to grow. For repotting never use pots that don’t have drainage holes, pots that aren’t glazed inside and out. Use, plastic and make sure have a tray under to fill with the water. Make sure it isn’t empty but not over filled either. I am still doing research on dormancy but I can come back to you on it.

    Also I do wonder the same for mine, they have been closed for awhile now. Doubt they’ve caught anything. Also only use carnivorous soil.
