My 5y/o’s little plant wasn’t looking so good. The Planta app said that it was over watered. The top soil wasn’t too moist, but further down it was, so I questioned that diagnosis. I went through a few posts and decided that it was probably not watered well. I cut some of the limbs that were getting dark. I stuck it in a plate with filtered water. And put it back where it was originally, in the sunniest spot in our yard - which gets some shade in the evening. Anything else I’m missing?

    its pretty hard to overwater these guys as their natural habitat is in bogs. make sure you’re not watering it with tap water, they don’t like the minerals. instead, use rain or distilled water.

    I’ve had a hard time with VFT… but some of the main things I’ve learned are 1) distilled water is best! 2) they prefer a mixture of like sphagnum moss and perlite, they don’t love the nutrients that soil has 3) old traps will die off, that’s totally normal 4) they can get sunburnt 5) too many bugs at once can kill the traps bc it takes too much energy! So if your 5y/o is feeding it, make sure it’s one trap at a time no more than every few weeks! I hope this helps!

      Great advice! I have it sitting outside. Do I still need to feed it?

      Hi! No you shouldn’t need to feed it while outside. It will catch its own bugs. Just make sure not to trigger the traps just to see them close. They only have so many times each trap can close before dying.

    One more on top of everyone’s great care tips — Venus fly traps “hibernate” during winter as part of their life cycle. So after the traps start dying off in fall, you gotta wrap it up & stick it in the fridge over the winter. Or else it will not regrow
