i got this little fella from my brother who works at the garden section of lowe’s. little fella won’t eat or close any of its traps, what do i do?

    I’m not sure why the traps aren’t closing so maybe someone who knows more can weigh in. I would just focus on keeping it healthy and I can give you some general care info: • It’s very difficult to grow these indoors because they need lots of light • They cannot have any fertilizer or regular soil; looks like it’s in sphagnum which is perfect • They drink A LOT so it’s a good idea to have a tray of water under the nursery pot • They don’t need to eat flies very often. They get their energy from light, just like other plants. Bugs are fertilizer for them, so even just 1 fly a month is good. • The trap will die after eating ~3 bugs. Don’t worry; it’ll grow a new trap.

    Totally agree with everything send_nodes said! More likely than not, if the plant came from Lowe’s (or any similar big-box store) it was receiving far from ideal care, which would explain the traps not closing. It takes *a lot* of energy for them to close their traps (hence why the leaves die off after a few closures), and so if they haven’t been getting enough water or sunlight then they’ll take time to recover, and part of that is conserving energy where ever they can. That said, as already stated, carnivorous plants by no means need regular feeding to survive, think of it as equivalent to fertilizing other plants, not totally required to live, but helpful to thrive. Give it some time and acclimate it to either living outside or under grow lights and you should have a happy flytrap!

      thank you!! i’m hesitant to put little fella outside because it’s been storming pretty bad where i am and he would definitely get destroyed. as soon as the weather clears up a bit i will be finding him a nice spot in the sun :)

      Yep that’s a good idea, or find a grow light if you want to keep it indoors long term. The brand Sansi has really bright grow lights that are pretty affordable
