I just bought my first carnivorous plants(!!!!) and have no idea what I’m doing. They seem to be Venus fly traps and pitcher plants in a pre-made bog. One chunk of the Venus fly traps was already dead (see empty brown spot). I bought some distilled water, but now what? The pitchers are filled with gnats (yay!) but the fly traps are itty bitty. Do I need to repot? Fill it in with more plants? How often should I be watering? Help! I’m banking on these little friends to help with my gnat problem so I want to make sure I’m paying them for their efforts 😂

    Got this exact setup at a nursery in Austin! lol I live in zone 8a. Mine stays outdoors until it freezes, then in front of an east window in the garage. I keep the tray filled with water. They are bog plants so they are used to wet feet. Haven’t repotted in 2? yrs. For the indoor gnats, I have sundews and pings under grow lights on bookshelves. They were COVERED in gnats this summer.     I have some dewy plants and some pitcher plants, going on a little over a year of ownership now. Since carniverous plants get their nutrients from bugs rather than the soil, I don't think you need to worry about repotting. Those guys look like they have plenty of room to me. I always keep the trays wet; the pots are constantly sitting in water, and they're very happy like that. I would reccommend you get carniverous fish flakes (flakes, not pellets) because during times when you don't have enough bugs or some other situation, you can use the fish flakes to feed your plants. Just make sure they are for carniverous fish, like bettas or ciclids.

      Fish flakes?! No way! That’s pretty much the coolest plant fact I’ve ever heard, thank you! There’s no shortage of flies right now (unfortunately) but I’ll keep that in mind for the day I finally rid my house of the fungus gnats!

      Glad to help! The dealer I got my little things from said that you could feed fish flakes once a month if you don't have any bugs. I wish you luck!
