Would this terracotta pot be good for a venus fly trap? Currently it's in the setup it came in from the store, a plastic pot in a plastic cup which has been working really well. But its growing roots out the bottom of the pot so I need to upsize a bit. I just constantly keep it sitting in a full cup of water so figured this would work the same but this plants doing so well I dont want to mess it up!!
From what I’ve been told, carnivorous plants do better in a plastic pot. I believe that terracotta pots are used to prevent overwatering. You’ll want your VFT constantly sitting on a pool of distilled water. Since this terracotta pot seems to be sitting in water, I’m not sure how it’ll work. Maybe since it’s in water, it will be fine. I was just told by the nursery I bought mine from that they do best in plastic. I have all 8 of my carnivorous plants in plastic and they seem to be thriving.

That’s interesting. Well, for what it’s worth I’ve only heard the opposite.🤪 I do use terracotta with succulents to help them dry out faster since the air can get through. But I also use terracotta for my pitchers, pings, and sundew. I sit the pings and sundew in a bowl of water and the terracotta allows it to absorb water well through it. It allows both air and water through depending on how you set it up. It’s worked great for the last year that I’ve owned carnivorous plants. The soil stays wet until it runs out of water in the bowl.

I use white plastic tall nursery pots that are very thick and durable. They have very long roots so a tall pot works great. Those terracotta pots are so cute 🥰 and I wish they were safe but they’re not. I’ve also tried reusing a gallon size tree pot and that works well too. The extra space helps keep them from drying out too but I use the tray to be safe 😊

Personally I wouldn’t use terracotta ! These plants love to be in damp soil and terracotta will absorb the water really fast, they do best in plastic pots with drainage holes so they can drink from the bottom (they like having wet feet)
