My son's Venus flytrap is trying to flower, but I believe that weakens this plant correct? He's already really struggling after we accidentally left him in the sun too long and it had a bad sunburn.

    When the leaves lose their water source they sunburn. Vft thrives on intense heat. If you keep the soil boggy(not damp) you shouldn’t have that problem again. A plastic pot will help retain the moisture better than terracotta. I’m in high 90’s here and have mine in a 2gal white bucket outside full intense sun with about an inch and a half of water(distilled or rain water only). Good looking plant! Good luck mama 😊

      Too much sun can still burn the leaves if the plant doesn’t have enough roots to keep them hydrated as well though. You’re definitely right that keeping them on a bog setup prevents this as long as you don’t sit in 8 hours of direct sun in 100°F+.

      Umm don't mind that, lol. I used outdoor soil temporarily out of desperation, because it was outgrowing the nursery pot, I have carnivorous soil ordered and it should arrive tomorrow.

      You should do only a mix of perlite and long strain sphagnum moss. Potting soil will kill the plant quickly, and carnivorous mixes tend to compact and suffocate the roots. The sphagnum and perlite mix keeps everything moist, not soaked, and allows a lot of airflow to the roots which keeps them thriving. You don’t wanna use terracotta with carnivores if possible as well because they leach moisture from the substrate and allow it to evaporate off the sides which reduces the moisture in the soil and the humidity in the microclimate around the plant.

      Did I read they leach minerals also? I bought mine at a big box not realizing how inconvenient the simplicity of it can be 😂😂😂. She was asking about the flower. Does it need to come off?

      @nikiller I think it is moss-mix, it's from a carnivorous plant shop here in Ohio and I've been in communication with them about this also. I'll get it repotted!

    absolutely cut the flower off. your plant is dying. take it out of that soil ASAP, any minerals at all will burn roots and kill the plant quicker. it's better to just leave the plant outside, vft need very bright light and it'll adjust to being outside within a week. keep it under something if you're worried, but after a week it's just fine under full sun. my vft went outside and lost two traps to sunburn, then EXPLODED with growth.

      before vs after. huge petioles and small traps. now outside and growing quicker than i can document it, i took the recent photo two days ago and there's already two more traps starting to come up on top of the four new traps in that photo. (my gal also had her flower cut off, i am propagating it)

    Repotted and got carnivorous soil setup, but maybe too late? It keeps looking worse. :(

      It's not too late. Maybe a smaller pot, they're really resilient

    First the pot it's in is terracotta, it needs to be in a plastic pot that doesn't leach minerals, second they need to be acclimated slowly to higher temperature outside. 85° is ideal anymore than that they will burn, also use a plastic water tray.

    Plastic pot, Plastic tray for water. If it's too hot outside find a shady spot or a shade screen

      It's under a grow light right now, because I didn't think it would survive outside in its current condition.

    When you go to repot pay attention to the roots and rizone if you see a little white tip it's good news also the rizone is white with a little pink hue it's good. They will bounce back.
