Hi guys! I’m absolutely terrible at keeping plants of all kinds alive! However! I want to change that! I’d like a carnivorous plant as I already have insect farms I can use to feed them! What type of plant should I try?

Manually feeding carnivorous plants can often lead to over feeding and damaging the plant. It’s honestly best to let your plant catch its own food unless it’s in a terrarium setting and even then it’s best to be super careful with manual feeding-many people often opting for specific fertilizer types like osmocote or maxsea. Carnivorous plant are also often considerably harder than most plants to care for. They need extremely specific conditions to thrive and will die eventually if watered with tap water. I would suggest something a bit easier like a pinguicula as they can survive in a lot of windowsill conditions and not to feel to pressed about feeding them. They need high sun and filtered water much more than they need bugs unfortunately.

A reverse osmosis system is the way to go unless you have extremely reliable amounts of fresh rain water. You can always buy it from the store it just gets expensive. If you live in zones 7/8 you can reliably grow sarracenia outdoors (some amount of protection from frost may be necessary in zone 8) and some drosera or flytraps will do wellon a windowsill. I highly suggest the book “savage garden” by Peter D’Amato. It’s an excellent resource used by lots of people in the community. I do not suggest keeping nepenthes if you have trouble with keeping plants alive. All of them have high light needs, and will need supplemental light if natural light is low. They have varying needs for humidity, some people with experience can get away without a humilier depending on conditions.- high light and water lower than 60ppm are pretty non negotiable though for all types.

I have lots of grow lights and full spectrum uvbs! I have a humid warm reptile room where I keep most of my plants- I also have a gnat issue which is another part of why I’d like some carnivores lol

🤫 Sundew are the ones that'll help with your gnats~ Drosera Capensis (Cape Sundew) is a great starter carnivore. Their dew is the perfect size for teeny bugs, and attracts them with a sweet aroma. The two big things for them (and most carnivores) are Light and Water. They can be acclimated to windowsill light, but prefer to be BLASTED- grow lights do wonders for them. If they don't have enough light they let you know, they'll stop making sticky dew. They need PURE water; no minerals, no fertilizers, no chemicals at all. It will burn their roots and kill them. Rain water, reverse-osmosis, or distilled water are the three most common options. I use distilled, the stuff they sell at grocery stores/walmart for baby room humidifiers is very pure. They also like to be sitting in water at all times, drying out is a killer. Tropical pitcher plants are a bit trickier, but since your space is high humidity they might be worth the challenge~ they're also more expensive usually too ;P Best of luck ✨👏🌱
