My boyfriend just got this Venus fly trap. I don’t know much about it, I know most people prefer to do tray watering but I have a question. Can he do tray watering and leave it there for how long? I’ve heard people leaving it for months and “nothing happens to it” but idk..? Or is he kind of supposed to do tray watering like a “normal plant” could he let it absorb water and once it has absorbed Can he just remove it from the tray and do tray watering again 1-2 days later? Someone help! He’s really excited. Another thing, he wanted it because his room tends to have mosquitoes so he wants the plant to eat the mosquitos😂. Could it be possible he can treat it as an inside plant? I know he could but the watering would be different as well. Can someone just explain, thank you!!

Tray watering really depends on how much sunlight, and how much water he didn’t get before you bought him. I tend to refill my tray about every 3-4 days because the water is low but not empty. I’d say they can survive a week without refilling the tray. If he wants it as an inside plant, give the VFT a lot of sun, maybe repot it to peat moss or sphagnum moss. Do not use miracle-grow. Best of luck!

About how many hours of sunlight do they need? Because he also really wants it as an inside plant

Minimum of four, but it will really thrive on eight. Mine gets about 8-10 hours because it’s on a south window.

Hi, I’m also new to VFT’s and tray watering in general. Does tray watering imply that the tray is supposed to be underneath the plant at all times? Or that you only used the tray at scheduled watering intervals (let’s just say twice a week for 30 minutes for example) and then you remove the tray until your next watering?

I recommend having a 1 inch tray and filling the tray according to Planta works well
