Hi! I just got my first pitcher plant! He’s also my first carnivorous plant. And I have a few questions, 1 How soon should I feed him? Does he need a certain amount of time to adjust to his new home before I should try feeding him? 2 Kinda working off the first question but what is the best thing to feed them? Live crickets? Freeze dried crickets? Flies? And where best to buy them? And lastly, I’ve seen some controversy on weather or not to put a little bit of water in the pitchers. And if I should what type of water would be best (rain vs distilled vs filtered)? Thank in advance!

My nepenthes all killed off all their pitchers when I got them 😅 So they literally had no living pitchers, and they were just throwing a fit while adjusting. So don’t worry if all the pitchers die off. Giving them enough light is the most important factor to get them to pitcher again (unless you have one of those crazy difficult varieties that needs diff temps for diff times a day, very specific humidity, etc). You don’t NEED to feed them, but I give mine freeze dried black soldier fly larvae or osmocote pellets if I happen to check the pitchers and they’re empty. Usually they will catch little gnats and stuff on their own. I got them from the seller (sweet leaf nursery- highly recommend as she is superrrr responsive and detailed with care questions). I don’t add water to the pitchers because I can just hold them up to the light and see an outline of the water level. If I did notice one was dry I would add a tiny bit of distilled water. But don’t dilute it too much because if it’s too watery it will ruin the digestive ability of the pitcher fluid.
