I've heard a ton about what water is safe but l've also head people are using tap water in certain cities so I thought I'd throw out all my questions about the easiest watering options I have available to me to see which ones are safe and what I should be investing my time in. Would fish tank water work with or without fish like can I use fish to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in a rain water container or use old fish tank water that would likely have fish poop in it) I am also already treating tons of city water to get rid of chlorine, chloramine and hard minerals but I think it still leaves some minerals in if it is not safe should I be worried about how I am storing rainwater (like if the container has metal components or is running off my roof that could pick up nutrients from decommissioning leaves) and for my last question would water from air conditioner dehumidifiers work or do I need to be concerned about what it may have come into contact in the attic (insulation, rusting metal, etc.)

It depends on which plants you’re keeping, but in the case of carnivores and calatheas it’s distilled water only for best results. I bought a relatively inexpensive water distillation machine on Amazon that works great (Vevor brand). You can also buy at grocery stores. Rainwater is illegal to collect in some states, like mine, but it would be a close second if you collected it directly and not the runoff. They make special collection barrels for this with a tap on the bottom made with safe materials. For less picky plants aquarium water is great! You don’t have to worry about the hard minerals and the chlorine/chloramine after it’s been used in a fish tank. The fish poop is wonderful fertilizer! I have no idea if A/C or dehumidifier water would come into contact with chemicals within the mechanical components that would cause an issue for plants? Maybe someone else has an idea?

Thank you guys for your advice I just ordered a TDS meter which should get here tomorrow I was trying to avoid getting one but everywhere I looked it said that’s the only way to be safe when making/collecting your own water for venous fly traps

Ok I just got the TDS meter and ran around testing basically everything So the air conditioner water was about 25ppm My tap was about 290ppm My refrigerator charcoal filtered water was about 170ppm And my fish tanks sat anywhere from 100 to 700ppm seemingly dependent on how many fish/plants I had in there

I used the air conditioner water (I did get it directly from the sores but I tested another that dripped into the gutter system and that was about 50-55ppm so I didn’t risk it with that
