Hi! so i got my first carni 7 days ago and ive been doing everything right, grow light, distilled water, ect, but lots of her traps are turning black, is this normal!?

    Traps turn black and die when the plant is out of use for them. Usually 2-3 triggers will cause it. They use a lot of energy to close the traps and it will only devote so much energy to each trap. Mine always has at least one trap at some point along the blackening process but there’s also always new growth. As long as you don’t lose traps faster than it builds some you’re good

    It also looks like that’s in the same container as it was purchased in. Might want to transfer it into a better pot. Needs TONS of light. So place grow light a few inches above if possible. And should be a good quality light. I have used crappy grow lights in the past and they seem to do ok for about 6 months and then crapped out on me. I have had lots of luck with quality grow light and also outside in direct sunlight. Mine will eat baby lizards (I live in Florida)

      Sounds like your lizards are pretty foolish, mines only been getting flies gnats and mosquitoes so far. I’m trying to slowly acclimate them to the sun but every time I give them any amount of direct sun something gets burnt even though they’re on a water tray. Do you have any tips to getting them to withstand the sun?

      I kept mine in shade for the first week then an area that got part sun for a few hours a day and then full sun. The baby lizards around here are so stupid lol

      They’ve been sitting in full shade since the last weekend of June. Sounds like I gotta find a new spot for them that doesn’t have too much sun but still a good bit. Should I aim for like 1-2 hours or maybe just 30-60 minutes at first?

    I did like 4 hours for the first time after the shade. One plant(big box store purchase) had a few traps that browned off in the sun but I noticed a good amount of new growth and those acclimated very quickly to the sun. A second plant that was purchased in a nursery acclimated right away to the sun with not too much burn. So don’t worry if you see some get burned … it will survive, I promise … I have had people say they just threw it directly in sun and let the old ones burn off and the new growth then came in acclimated.

    Yes it's normal, it just needs pruning. Snip off the dead black ones so the the plant can focus more energy on new ones
