I just got this pink princess, does anybody have any tips?
Ok Iâm super happy I gave Monty a better look this morning. Just for aesthetics and to get the aerial roots to attach I thought a sturdier moss pole would be best..đđ Iâm excited to monitor its growth.
Is it bad my California poppy has be growing close to the side of the pot
Brazil Vine Grow Light Question??? Iâve had this plant for a few months, itâs not getting enough sunlight so I got these Sansi lights(last picture). It gets 8 hours of low indirect sunlight a day. How many hours/ brightness should I give the plant? Also what time of day? Thanks
Has anyone ever grown Sarah Bernhardt peonies indoors? I bought one and a giant pot to put her in, but our yard doesnât get much sun, so I was thinking indoors with a grow light? Just wondering what my rate of success will be⌠:)
What do we think about my new setup? Please help me out if you have any suggestions!!! any comments will be appreciated!!!
Does anyone have advice for what to do with this leaf? Half of the leaf split off awhile ago and this spot has only gotten worse, but there are no issues with any of the other leaves. Should I just leave it like that or is there something I can do? Thanks!
I got this pretty lime green plant at Walmart on the clearance rack but there is no lable to tell me what it is. Thanks in advance for the help
I just got in a bunch of starter plants wrapped in Saran Wrap with soil. I have a little greenhouse set up and plan to put them in semi hydro potting but should I repot them right away or leave them for a few days? Iâm concerned for root rot since there arenât getting air but donât want to stress them out by repotting them.
Hey guys! Should I repot this African violet? She is growing too long for the pot. Iâm worried itâs going to break off.
Hello, I used the below soil with a terracotta pot in my Begonia. How would you classify this soil in Planta? Itâs more of a potting mix but says itâs for succulents, so do I select succulent soil or general potting mix? I know setting the soil properly is important so Planta can remind me when you water properly. Thank you, Eric
Finally set up my plant shelf! đ No more tiny pots all over the window sills or worrying about my North-facing plants. I canât stop staring at it!!! (Itâs right in my office next to my desk)
Notice that tiny little shoot on the edge of the pot? I am so happy. Can I propagate this? How do I do this safely? Newbie here. But my plants have given me so much joy! Thank you for the tips!
Hi, I have yet to keep a plant alive for more than 4 months, but I got some new ones and Iâm really trying to keep them alive. I have a money tree, a calathea, and a birds nest fern. Theyâre in my office near a southwest-facing window with a grow light. (The ones on the bottom shelves are fake). Anyway I would appreciate any and all suggestions and advice if you have any!
đąMyth: Rocks/leca at the bottom = enough drainage Placing LECA or rocks at the bottom of a pot without drainage might feel like a good solutionâit seems logical that theyâd help water escape. But this widely held belief is sadly not entirely true, and following it can do more harm than good. đ§What Really Happens In a container without drainage holes, excess water has nowhere to go. It pools in the bottom layers, saturating the soil and creating oxygen-poor conditions that stress roots and promote rot. Whether or not you add gravel, if water canât exit the pot, it might eventually accumulate and/or clog the air pockets in the soil. đ§ŞThe (Contested) Science: The Perched Water Table A concept often used to explain poor drainage is the perched water table. According to this idea, when water moves through soil, gravity pulls it down, while capillary action holds it up. At a certain point, these forces balance, creating a saturated zoneâtypically just above a finer-to-coarser material transition (like soil sitting atop rocks). This model suggests that adding gravel or LECA simply shifts this saturated zone higher in the pot, closer to the rootsânot lower where youâd want it. Thatâs why many gardeners and horticulturists advise against it. However, some researchers argue that the perched water table conceptâwhile helpful as a simplificationâisnât always accurate in small container environments or when using modern potting mixes. Soil particle size, moisture tension, and structure interact in more complex ways than the model assumes. â Whatâs Not a Myth: Drainage Holes and Good Soil Matter Regardless of the theoretical model, one truth remains: water needs somewhere to go. The most effective way to improve drainage is: ⢠Always use pots with drainage holesâthey allow gravity to remove excess water. ⢠Use a well-structured potting mix with good porosity. Amend with perlite, vermiculite, or bark to improve aeration and drainage. ⢠Avoid overly dense, moisture-retentive soil unless youâre planting something that specifically needs it (like some ferns or bog plants). Test your mix by watering and observing. If it drains slowly or pools on top, it needs more amendment. And make sure drainage holes are clear and not blocked. đިWhen Rocks Can Be Useful While adding rocks instead of drainage holes isnât ideal, there are still good reasons to use them: ⢠To reduce soil volume in very large pots (where deep soil layers arenât needed for shallow-rooted plants). ⢠To add weight to prevent top-heavy pots from tipping. ⢠To cover large drainage holes, using mesh or broken potteryâthis prevents soil loss without significantly blocking water flow.
Scindapsus Peasun. Really interesting to see how the leaf shape starts to change as it climbs. One of the vines started pushing out stunted / funky looking leaves. I should have cut it after the second one but I wanted to see how it grew out. You know, for âscienceâ or whatever đ Definitely going to chop and prop this one.
I bought the planter on the left off of Amazon not realizing how big it was. Could I technically put this pencil cactus in there and let it grow into the pot size? Itâs been in the same pot and soil for 5 years, and Iâve given it multiple âhaircutsâ if you will haha Edit: it comes with a 4â riser that I planned on using since it is such a large jump
Hey plant friends I welcomed home today a new plant baby. The Monstera Peru (aka Monty).
So I did this today to my monstera any tips other than what Iâve done : put root powder on aerial root and put in soil, put main roots in water will get bigger thing to hold it tomorrow
Is this the plant too far gone? Too the right that what it looked like day one and now it looks like what it is to the left
