I am NOT good with plants at all. I went to a Farmers Market and there was a nursery. I call myself getting “Low Maintenance “ plants and so far I think one is already dying. It’s not been like 2 -3 weeks. The one on the left is a Dieffenbachia Camille and the one on the right is a Snake plant. What am I doing wrong here? Thanks.

Snake plants thrive on neglect and lots of bright indirect light so if you’ve been giving her a lot of attention and water it might be stressing her out. But if the leaves feel deflated and the soil is very dry then it’s time to water!

What do you mean “indirect light”? I have a terrace that she is on and as the sun rises and set it moves across my terrace. The plant is NOT sitting directly in the sun but it gets sun through the tree that sorta blocks the sun. The other plant…. Idk .. her leaves are browning in different spots. I am trying not to feel defeated or discouraged with the plants. Should I repot them from the nursery pot they came in? Give them food? I have some egg shells sitting in water if that would help. Thanks for sharing.

“Indirect light” just means not having direct sunlight on the leaves. The reason this can be hard on the plant is because the direct sunlight can burn the leaves. Indirect light gives them the light they need without being too potent. I usually put mine a foot or two away from the window when the sunlight is really bright to give them the light they need without burning the leaves.

Thank you for that explanation. Makes sense.

Your dieffenbachia actually looks really good! You should expect the lower (older) leaves to eventually yellow and fall off as the plant grows.

OMG! 🥰 You made my day. I was like “Kimberley… it’s only been 3 weeks and it’s dying” Is there any food I should give her? I watered her today and so my next water should be like 10 days someone shared with me.

Glad I could help reassure you! I give all my plants fertilizer once a month May-September and once or twice during the cooler months (sometimes not at all for succulents/snakes lol 🤫). I use Espoma Organic Indoor liquid. For dieffenbachias, I usually wait until the top inch or so of soil is mostly dry and there's minimal moisture in the rest of the pot. I have a metal chopstick that I use sometimes, but at this point I can pick up most plants and tell if they need watered by their weight

I recommend getting a golden pothos and a ZZ plant, they are much easier and very forgiving as far as underwatering. And there are many different pothos you can choose from. A diffenbachia is not that easy for 1st time plant owners. So IF it dies don't be hard on yourself.

I think they seem fine! If anything you could get them out of those nursery pots. Why do you think they aren’t doing well?

The leaves are getting brown. The leaves don’t look shiny. Thanks for asking. Is there a good pot size I should buy? And type of pot? Something with drainage- would that be best? Thanks so much.

The dieffenbachia needs lots of bright light, just none directly on the leaves. Water when dry. I let mine dry 100%.

Thank you. Should I get a light for the plant ?
