I’m fairly new to caring for plants- how often should I be misting my plants? I know the app’s premium would tell me and I’m planning on getting it soon but thought it would be good to also ask actual people I’ve been giving them all a little spritz every day this past week as the temp where I live has been around 33-34°C (91.4-93.2°F) TIA!:)

There are different schools of thought for and against misting. Some say the water droplets from the handheld spray bottles are too big. They cause other problems like promoting fungal growth because the droplets take too long to dry out. The droplets block the transpiration of water from the leaves leading to edema. The water droplets are too big to be efficiently absorbed by the plants. The water droplets can cause leaf scorching/sunburn in full sun. A humidifier provides a fine mist easily absorbed by plants. I don’t mist since my area is subtropical with high humidity levels. I would add a humidifier in dry areas to get consistent humidity levels.

Hm interesting, I live in Australia and we are approaching summer so it’s very hot and humid constantly, would you recommend just sticking to regular watering, no misting?

You don’t need to mist or use a humidifier if you’re humidity levels are naturally high in summer. Check the humidity levels with a hygrometer. Most tropical plants like levels between 40% and 70%. 🪴🍀

Most “experts” believe it does little good except give the plant owner a sense of caring for the plants. Get a humidistat to measure what your humidity level is. If you are running a/c all the time, your humidity will be low. I try to keep it around 50%.

I might look into that- coming into summer I only use aircon if it gets to 40°C otherwise I just put on my ceiling fan I’m thinking of getting a grow light or something for the winter time when mostly for the super cold nights that get to 4°C

I recommend using a humidifier - it’s more effective than misting at actually raising the humidity. And group your plants together, they’ll create a bit of a microclimate together.

I haven’t thought of grouping them together.. I’ll give it a go- thanks!

I don't mist at all. In the winter when the heat is on and the air is dryer I use a humidifier. That's usually the best way to add moisture to the air.

I stopped misting my plants years ago. Not necessary. Grouping plants together is more effective.

Someone else suggested grouping my plants as well, I’ve put these three together on a shelf that gets some sun
