Hi, new plant enthusiast here — any advice for indoor plants who don’t require lots of direct sunlight? I live in Ireland and our sunny days are few and far between but I don’t want to rely on a grow light as electric is dear.

I know it’s the most basic but my snake plants do so well in lower to mid light. They may not be the most exciting plants but there is a lot of variety within the genus (sansevieria/dracaena). My fav right now is the Fernwood or Mikado. Other plants we have in our home that do well in lower light are our Pothos and Baby Rubber Plant. My sister grows a nice ZZ plant in pretty low light, too. These are all basic though so hopefully someone has more creative suggestions, too. Good luck!

Snake plants do best with regular indirect light, but they still do pretty well if they’re getting at least some light. Just be very careful not to overwater.

Snake plants (sansevieria) survive just about anywhere as long as you don't overwater them. Peace lily will tolerate low light. Some others are philodendron, cast iron plant, Chinese evergreen, parlor Palm and some pepperonias (obtusifolia for one although I call it spoonbill pepperonia), most houseplants do well in bright indirect light but many will adapt to and tolerate lower light conditions.

PS we are headed over the big pond in a couple months to the UK. I will wave as we go over!

Pothos do well in indirect light. Check the current usage of small single plant grow lights and light bars. They are LED lights with very low energy needs even when running 10 to 12 hours a day.

Many good plant suggestions but just keep in mind that many plants will survive in lower light but they will not thrive. I have many many grow lights and my electric bill has gone up. But you will probably not notice any change with just a couple. Why not get a few of your favorite plants and a couple grow lights, but keep the number of plants down. That way you have a few thriving beautiful plants to be happy about rather than a bunch of okay looking plants.
