This is my first attempt to grow vertical, I started it last December 27, extended the pole 17 days ago and it’s already at the top. I’m hoping to get it chopped and extended next week. I was inspired by Sydney the Plant Guy on YouTube 😁 I am curious to know what size pot you would use either a 6” or 8” ? It’s currently in a 4.5” tall take out container I received from the Chinese restaurant. It’s been doing great but the plant guy recommended an 8” container. I ordered two pots one 6” and one 8”. The pole is 48” tall and rests against the wall because it is too top heavy. I appreciate any suggestions 😁

I think you’re gonna need to wait until you take the plant out of the pot to see what its roots are doing. I had a couple plants this year that I thought were doing excellent, but when I went to repot, the roots were underwhelming. Personally I only ever go up one pot size, so my vote is for the 6”

The leaves are stunning!! I’ve always heard to look at how wide your roots are and do a pot that’s no more than 1 inch wider than the root width

Yesss 🙌 Gorgeous! I was also inspired by Sydney Plant Guy ☺️ I’ve been growing a manjula pothos. I love the huge leaves and variegation, but the manjula gets super crinkly leaves that I’m not sure I like. They tend to tear themselves when unfurling. I recently started mine over because it had too many damaged leaves that I was tried of looking at 😅 Maybe I’ll try a different type of pothos though! I’ve been keeping mine in take-out cups too! 😂 But the taller it gets, the better it is to have a heavy pot to reduce the chance of tipping

I’ve always wanted to try manjula on a moss pole. Jan’s is really gorgeous. I will have to take your experience with crinkly leaves into consideration. I don’t leave my window open like he does 😆 And with all that Sydney humidity it’s no wonder he grow them so beautifully.

I don’t know if it’s a universal problem. Jan’s doesn’t seem to be as crinkly as mine. I’ll try to remember to take a picture of my top cut when I get home

I would love to see it! Maybe not a universal problem but don’t encourage me 😂

So you can see some are worse than others. This is just my top cut. I don’t seem to have pictures of the worst leaves before I reset the pole

It’s hard to see the depth of the leaf folds in a picture, but this kinda shows it close up

One key note Jan always mentions is that “the moss pole is a vertical extension to the pot” so what we take from that is, the sphagnum medium is where the most of the roots would reside as it matures. That being said, I think it’s up to you. You could probably use a 6” as long as the roots fit nicely and it’s stable enough to hold your extended pole in a very chunky mix. He also uses a plant stake to stabilize the pole.

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions!! I have found some really thick air roots as thick as my pinky finger. I can’t wait to open it up and see how long they are. I’m going to try the 6” pot for now and I’m sure I can use the 8” pot for something else 😁

And I found my first golden pothos a year ago at Walmart and now I have them everywhere 😂
