I post in this group - as opposed to the Lithops Lovers community - every once in a while because everyone including me is terrified of killing these things - because they are known to die after single watering at the wrong time i.e. water your plants before going on a trip. And it's often one and done and the person saying "oh, I just kill them," I have a bunch of Lithops - it was over 30, now...14? - and I have watched their mutations here in this Northern Utah life. Note: I had maybe ten plants (little cactus, a couple Gasteria) in 2022, read about Lithops all year, bought some at Home Depot that October, and then plunged into full succulent obsession while watching these things go from pristine, to wrinkled, to decimated, and then clean itself up by July to maybe spit out a flower. I have more questions about them than when I started. The rule is keep them dry in winter, water when growing, but maybe not if the flower is blooming etc. I have that kind of down. But this plant's genetics come from a different hemisphere, hence my Winter is their Summer. BUT these are raised from seed in California, and I give them high power grow lights year round. My opinion after every dollar-sized Lithops split, but multiplied in odd ways is: they're taking care of themselves and adapting beyond general rules lol. It's a half-baked opinion that could be solved with scientific explanation of variables. But that's no fun lol. This is the same plant. Currently, it is three and a tiny foot. Also, here is who inspired the name (the last member of band King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard who name I haven't used as a plant name).

I think everyone wants to try these because they are so different. Your right about most are not successful with them. I had a few for a while. I think one lasted about a year. But I discovered Split Rocks. And I like these better because they are larger than most Lithops. I’ve had these for well over a year. Had them under a strong grow light which burned a couple of them. So they sit on my window shelf and pretty much get ignored. My only rule of care is not to water unless the leaves are very squishy. It seems to work. Planta would have me watering them much more often. For this year I have probably watered them twice.

I'm going to tell my secret: A few weeks ago, I was shopping for Pleiospilos and, while inspecting one, the seed pod fell out and onto the ground. I am on the side of "ask first before taking any cuttings on the ground of a store," but it was in bad shape, and I seem to be the only only shopping for them at this store - I maybe sorta keep track lol. K. The point is I'm gonna prep and plant those seeds. I hope I have a pot like yours next year.

I have to share one more anecdote about Pleiospilos nelii. Two summers ago, I decided to put a pot containing three of these guys on my scorching hot patio. I was using a grated IKEA shoe rack as protection against afternoon sun. All the sucs under there were doing great so why not test the "Pleiospilos can tolerate scorched earth." Well, I looked at that pot the next day, and one of three was orange and juicy; not flat and disintegrating, but almost plump and sweating. What happened? I did not account for the sun using one of the 40 windows around my deck to shoot a concentrated ray - off another window - to bake a one-inch plant. It was great aim lol.

Good luck. I understand it takes a very long time from seed to viable plant.
