I wasn’t expecting any of my airplants to flower within any kind of reasonable timespan, my expectation was that this would take at least 6-12 months of growing and keeping them happy before I saw anything but my xerographica is out here starting to blush and putting out not one, but two flower spikes! That’s like a win win win. I’d love to see everybody else’s airplants and if anybody has some flowers on there too. That other airplant in this photo is a hybrid of a streptophylla and a caput-medusae and came to us already slightly blushing. Several other airplants I have are/have been in blush for some time with absolutely no show of flower spikes so seeing two spikes forming the same day this one started to blush is crazy to me.

I got this one at a plant/crystal store in New Port Richey, the hybrid was a surprise and took some rigorous research/testing/phone calls to figure out what it was after ordering just that wooden base for the xerographica. All my other airplants are either wild rescues, fb marketplace orders, or from Lowe’s. I have 5 recurvata, one of them is big the other 4 less than a half inch, a brachycaulos, 2 bulbosa, a setacea, 4 different ionantha, and my caput medusae in addition to the two big ones. By far the easiest plants on the planet, you just throw em in a bowl of water once a week and then let them dry upside down so they don’t get crown rot

It’s the end of their life cycle, they put out flowers and then once the flower dies they produce a bunch of pups at the base and give the pups all its nutrients. Hopefully mine produces a lot of them given how fast the flower spike formed, then I can spend several years growing those to full size

I gotta get my hands on one. I just ordered a stricta compacta, funkiana, butzii, fasciculata, tectorum ecuador, juncea, scaposa, and duratii all from peace love and happiness, they’re doing a sale on airplants and a lot of other things too right now, I just hope they’re a good company as it’s my first order from them and they use Shopify so 😬🤞🏻
