When buying plants from a big box store, do we always need to repot them when we take them home? For some reason I was under the notion that I had to repot and get rid of all the soil it came with lol. Seems wasteful. Not sure where that idea came from. Wondering if it can just stay in the pot I bought it in if it’s doing well?
I usually just keep it in the nursery pot as long as it’s healthy and has suitable soil

This is what I do too. If I need to repot it, I try to let wait about 2-3 weeks to allow it to get over the shock of a new environment and get used to its new space before I stress her out even more.

If the soil is water logged or has pests like gnats, then yes, I'll repot, quarantine the plant and get rid of soil. If things seem "ok" then I won't, but I'll still quarantine and do pest preventative things.
6 likes Okay mine is quarantined right now and I just sprayed it down with neem oil. Hopefully that should get rid of anything but it didn’t seem to have any pests

Repotting is stressful so I wouldn’t do it right away. Frankly, you don’t need to do it at all, if it’s not root bound. I often just drop it in a cache-pot and Bob’s your uncle.

It depends on the plant and where i purchased from. Big box store - let it acclimate in quarentine for couple weeks and then repot. Nursery/greenhouse i usually wait a while if its healthy and if its in the right soil for the plant type.
