Hi all! My sister gave me this monstera and I’m not a fan of how tall it is and how few leaves it has. Currently, each aerial root makes up about a third of the plants total root system, and the roots at the base of the plant make up about one third. What I’d like to do is cut the bottom of the plant off around the red line in the second picture, and bury the aerial roots in the soil. I also plan to cut off the bottom most leaf as it’s a little rough. Will my monstera survive or is it going to be too much stress for the aerial roots to handle the whole plant? Update: I did it! It looks so much better and definitely more sturdy as well for now since there isn’t so much weight so high up!

Don’t do it. Use a narrow tall planter and a moss pole or stake to secure the leaves and encourage climbing. They don’t need too much soil. Use some aroid potting mix.

you can definitely do it!!!!! those aerial roots are doing exactly what they're designed to do, they can definitely support the plant if you bury them completely.

Monstera are pretty sturdy when it comes to the ole chop n prop. It should be fine.

I’d also put it on a pole. It’s easier to stake them when they are small like this. I lost a lush beauty 2 years ago when I tried to separate her and stake the plant. We’ll always have memories. 😬

Do it but make node cuttings & you can propagate it so you can add it back to the pot after they have secondary roots if you want a plant w multiples! Or you have a few new plants!
