Hey guys! Just got this new velvet calathea in just a bowl filled with water. Is it okay to keep her like this or is it mandatory that I put her in soil? New plant mom here 🌱😊

Many plants can be grown hydroponically. Growing calathea this way goes against my natural inclinations because calathea don't like things overly wet. On the other hand if it's healthy why change it? Another Factor might be that water roots are different than soil roots and if you put it in soil it may go through a downtime as it transitions from water roots to soil roots. I don't know if this is true of all varieties but I know it is true of some varieties.
0 J'aimeYou’ll have to add fertilizer once it’s adjusted 👍🏻 do some research first, if you want to keep plants hydro I suggest getting a hydro specific fert. This will make life much easier figuring out dilution ratios.
2 J'aimeI have never seen one for sale in water. I bought a big one and the lady said she was easy to keep. Just water once a week. Well……not for me! Her tips of leaves turned brown. I moved her to my outside porch for more humidity. Made sure the soil was dry 1 or so down. Watered her and let water run out the bottom. Had her in a footed planter pot so her roots wouldn’t be soggy. She kept looking worse and worse. Then I buried her. My calathea was beautiful, but I found her hard to care for. I researched a lot trying to keep her beautiful!
