Can someone help me with when and how to stake plants. I have a heart leaf philodendron, and a wandering dude, baby rubber plant, money tree, etc (I think you can click on my profile and see all of my plants). I see a lot of photos of plants with stakes that I would’ve never thought needed a stake. Some tied on, some just there to lean on I guess.

That’s a great question! Some of your plants can be “trained” to grow up/on surfaces like your philodendron, pothos and tradescantia.. while others can be supported by the base or even pruned in particular ways to help it grow, I use wooden marshmallow sticks to help support my 8 yr old jade plant!

When to stake depends on personal aesthetics or a need to support the plant to encourage maturation or to protect the plant from damage: Aesthetics - You determine is you like the look of a hanging plant or one on a trellis. Limited shelf or table top space may drive you to stake a plant to create more space for other plants. Maturation - Plants like pothos, syngoniums and monsteras change leaf shape after climbing a trellis or structure like a wall. The leaves split even more when climbing a trellis. Damage protection- Large heavy plants hanging over the edge of a pot can scrape on the pot rim causing damage. Add a trellis to take the weight off the plants and stop the vines from scraping the rim. Check online articles and videos on how to stake your individual plant. There are many ways depending on the length and variety of plants. 🪴🍀
