I’ve been seeing a trend of people on social media do “bottom watering”. I was wondering if anyone here has done this and if so if you prefer this method of watering or if you only do it for certain plants. And I’m adding a picture of my African violet just for fun 😊

I use this method all fall/winter for all my plants. It allows me to keep the top inch of soil dry helping to minimize pests that like to live in that top layer when moist. It also minimizes the mold that grows on the soil due to decreased air flow in my home during that time and it taking longer for the soil to dry out. Once our days get a bit longer, warmer, and I can open my windows more frequently, I’ll switch back to top watering. My only con to bottom watering is it can be very time consuming depending on how many plants you have to water that specific day.

I do this in the cooler months as well, but in the spring/summer I drench my plants all over to help wash away dirt/pests!

I’m really bad about adding too much water… I switched to bottom watering a couple years ago, and it’s been life-changing. My plants don’t end up overwatered anymore.

I will also add that you want to make sure that your top watering every now and then just to flush out the minerals and stuff.

Overwatering doesn’t happen because of the amount of water, it’s how often the plant is water, unless it doesn’t have drainage

I do this for my Venus fly trap cause it needs a lot of water but I don’t want to overwater it. Works great I’m thinking about doing it With others.

I started bottom watering most my plants, if they allow. It’s easier for me to throw a bunch of plants in the tub, then try going around and water everything individually. It also helps with overwatering.
