Recently picked up a ZZ plant I plan on prepping for gifting my friend as a housewarming gift. I’m new to this plant, so if anyone has any tips to share, they’d be very greatly appreciated. Checked the roots yesterday and found he was VERY root-bound and has a rhizome the size of a small potato. I ended up having to cut him out of his pot, removed all his previous soil (didn’t seem chunky enough) and replaced it with Espoma’s Cactus and Succulent mix. TIA for any tips! ☺️ (and feel free to turn this into a thread to share any tips or tricks for any other ZZ plant owners)

I’m planning on getting him a different pot, since his rhizome is only very loosely covered with soil and I definitely wanna make sure it has space to grow, but I don’t wanna move it up to too big of a pot since I know they enjoy being snug in pots and enjoy being root-bound. It’s currently in a pot that’s 4 1/2 inches in diameter, so should I look for a 5-in or 6-in pot? TIA

As much as they absolutely love to be snug in their pots (literally busting thru a plastic nursery pot), going to a 6" pot should be fine. I would just be mindful with watering and make sure that the soil doesn't stay too wet too long. I water mine about once a month maybe every three weeks depending how warm it is (no A.C). They can tolerate in all sorts of lighting which is great. Good choice for a housewarming plant in my opinion; it's super low maintenance and very forgiving with water and light tolerance.

Thanks for all of the information! Planta’s currently recommending to water it every 19 days in September, but should I change it to dry out a little longer? And if you don’t mind my asking, though I know they’re very low-light tolerant, I’ve got north and south windowsills, so should I just stick it in the south window, or get it used to a north window in case my friend’s place doesn’t have a lot of light? She’s moved into a dorm with 3 roommates she doesn’t know, so I wanted to get something that can handle a little forgetfulness from college stress and likely not so bright windows.

Planta will kill your ZZ if you follow their watering schedule! 😆 Your ZZ will tell you when to water it because it’s stems will wilt and potatoes will shrivel up and then you can water them 😄

I got him at Ott’s Exotic Plants in Schwenksville, PA. Highly recommend if you live in SE PA. It’s like an indoor botanical garden, but they let you buy the giant, gorgeous plants. All their stuff I’ve gotten has always been in great condition. Ziggy here was $10. 😊

I use Planta more as a reminder to check my plants than an actual schedule. Its mostly accurate give or take a couple of days, however, there are times I find myself watering up to a week prior or after what it says. They are definitely tolerant of low light but will do better with more light. I have mine a few feet from a South facing window and its doing great. No matter what lighting you choose now, it will adapt to the lighting your friend gives it. .

Thank you. That’s good to know. I really appreciate all of your help 😊 And I took your advice and repotted Ziggy today into the 6-in pot, so it’s still got room to grow, but won’t be swimming in soil and water.

A word of caution, they get very big. When I got it, it was three stems and very small. Very easy plant to grow and only drinks every 2 weeks.

Yours is gorgeous! 😆 I’d love if my friend’s ZZ grows that big someday. I’ll have to ask for an update 😊

So what’s your secret for watering/fertilizing? I’m on my 3rd plant and I just pulled out another stem today.

Alex, I have a zz that gave me 3 new shoots all in one week. I use the weakly, weekly method. I fertilize every time I water, but with 1/2 the normal dose, and only when my zz is dry. I really mean dry, my moisture meter is on #1. 🌿 This method works for me. 👍🏾
