Added some plants to my goldfish aquarium. Pothos do really well. The water quality has been noticeably better and it gives me some extra space for plants 💕🐠🌱

Are they simply floating, roots and all, in the water?!

The leaves should clear the water. I bought these clips for mine so that only the roots go in the water (little fish like to swim amongst them).

I have a few aquatic plants that get submerged. The pothos are balanced on the rim. The leaves are above water, roots underwater and each seem to have one larger root reaching nearly the bottom of the aquarium. The plants that I can’t balance like that ( peace Lilly, stromanthe and smaller pothos) are in baskets/pots that hang over the rim. All only roots under water. I used to get a bit of algae in the tank but not anymore with the above water plants

Lol and you can water your plants with the water that you take out of your fish tank to clean it and they love it

Nice!!! I am cycling a brand new tank at the moment and have an arrowhead, a bamboo stalk, neon pothos, and cebu blue pothos growing out. The roots grow like crazy!!!!!!

I had arrowhead vine at one time too. They did well but I ended up taking them out bc I had other plans down the road for them. I’m trying to root some wandering dude in the aquarium rn as well. I think they will do well

Oh, I’m sure they will those things propagate like crazy. I have so many I don’t even know what to do with them. I just give them away or throw them out. 😂 My arrowhead was getting really leggy so I decided to plop it in there as well, but I went back to the little container it was in and it’s growing new leaves so I guess now I have two haha but the roots are growing really long already. Your tank is way bigger than mine, but when I was googling it, it said be wary because of how aggressively they grow and the tiny little roots can get into your filters and stuff and take over your whole tank. And since I had enough of those I was like, yeah never mind.

I use sponge filters, so I’m not worried about roots getting into them

Partly why I decided to try in the aquarium, bc there’s soo much I don’t know what to do with all of it but I hate to just throw out cuttings

This is very cool but are the grow lights safe for the fish? When I had fish they needed a special light

Isn’t a grow light similar to sunlight? There are lights for planted aquariums. I think these would be similar to grow lights only closer to the surface of the water instead of raised above

Plant grow lights actually are way more intense than your typical aquarium lights - however in your set up, they’re not directly over the fish, and the only drawback you might see is a more rapid production of algae with intense lighting, combined with goldfish 🤷🏻‍♀️ But it won’t hurt anybody. Unless I suppose they’re not waterproof and they fall in the tank. But otherwise you’re good lol

I’m actually getting less algae. I think bc the water quality is better??

Maybe do some searching and I will myself I would love to know why there has been less algae

I checked on if it could hurt the fish. Sounds like the intensity could actually burn them. And some fish don’t like intense lights and need a place to hide. They have never seemed bothered and I keep a pretty close eye on them and never looked like they had any issues that seemed like it could be burn. But I know the intensity of grow lights decreases dramatically as you get further from the light. I guess it could be a great reason to get floating plants though, so the fish sort of have some shade 😊

Yeah nothing looks particularly “bad” about your setup IMO 🙂
