Would you say this Bear Paw plant looks healthy?? It seems to lose a lot of its little paws, but new ones are always growing. When I google pictures of them they are a lot “fuller” than mine. Is there anything I can do to help it??

The pot it’s in looks quite large for the size of the plant you have. I tend to opt for something no more than 1-2 inches in diameter larger than the width of the plant’s root ball. I’ll attach a photo of my bear paw for reference, but I would recommend trying to place it in a smaller pot to see if that changes anything for it. My best guess just from the looks of it would be that the larger size of the pot it’s currently in makes it take longer for the soil to dry out between waterings, and leaves it sitting in moist soil for much longer than it needs to, which could be contributing to the lost leaves. These cacti need very well-draining soil, so if you need to replace any of the soil during the repotting process, I highly recommend Espoma’s Organic Cactus and Succulent Mix, and I would avoid Miracle Grow’s cactus mix for this one. It just not well-draining enough, especially in more humid climates. Hope this helps.

Another thing you could try is pruning it in the parts where it’s growing back much smaller leaves, where the leggy stems are at the moment. Cutting the stems down will force the plant towards focusing its energy on new growth in those areas, and cutting the stems will likely lead to a bushier look up top for the plant. In the meantime, you can take the cuttings from pruning it and allow them to callous over, then gently place them over a small pot of cactus mix, watering the soil only when it’s completely dried out, then once those pieces propagate and form roots, you can stick them at the base of your plant to make it bushier at the bottom. The other possible reason why the new leaves are so much smaller could be that it needs more light too. You can rule lighting out if it’s getting at least 6 hours of sunlight and within a foot of a south-facing window. Otherwise, placing it closer to a brighter window or sticking it under a grow light might help the plant grow back some larger leaves for you.

How much light does it receive? The leggy and thinner growth could be due to not receiving enough light. I have mine outside to receive the morning sun

My plant doesn’t look as good but I can give you an idea of how much light it needs. These lights are on about 16 hours a day. Each pod is 10 watts LED. The total of all four is equivalent to a 600watt incandescent.
