Hey everyone! I have a variegated Whale Fin Sansevieria, but all the pups it’s produced so far are solid green. I was wondering if there’s a way to increase the chances of getting variegated babies. Should I be dividing the rhizome differently, or is it just luck? Would love to hear if anyone has had success with this! (I have it near my grow light as well so it does get 12 hours of light )

I’ve read about this happening with snake plants specifically as the variegation is a more unstable mutation than in other plants

It has to do with genetics and cross pollination. Because of recessive and dominant genes within the plants. If you want a certain color mutation, then separate the two plants that have those colors, and take the offspring that most noticably have that color, and cross breed them, and so on.

Hmmm…. I’ll tell you what I’ve always thought happened. But no personal experience. The pups from the mother plant should be variegated. Sometimes they need to mature for the variegation to show. Also more intense light may improve the variegation. However you will not get variegation on pups from leaf props. They will come out solid green. So if your plant was a leaf prop, the pups won’t be variegated.
