My poor Hosta hasn’t been happy since I brought her home a few weeks ago. Wilted, losing leaves. Had her in indirect light in a north facing window, tried a south window and no improvement. 🆘 any advice welcomed! Thanks! 😊

    For the wilting, it may be thirsty or may want slightly more light (hostas generally want shade, but the more yellowy leaf varieties like more light than average.) If it's still wilty when the soil has stayed moist, that can be an early sign of root rot. As for the leaf stem length, that's normal for this kind of hosta; as it grows it'll fill in with more leaves; it just looks a little odd while it's young. Do be aware that hostas need a winter dormancy and will fully die back for it, which is why they're usually planted outside

    You may want to try repotting. A lot of times plants are root bound when you buy them. Just suggesting this as it looks like it’s still in the nursery pot

      I repot my new plant friends as soon as I get them home, it gives them fresh soil with lots of nutrients, if I’m gonna keep the pot it came in I as a rule of thumb wash their pots with soapy water and also cut back about %20-25 on the roots off so they’ll stay the size they are. I tried Hoyas and they were tough for me cuz in allergic to latex and that’s what that waxy substance on them is basically latex but by the time I could figure out what the heck was going on I was in an ambulance 🚑. I most definitely think they are all so absolutely beautiful 🤩!!

      The OP’s plant is a hosta and not a Hoya. I would not recommend cutting thriving roots on any plant in my opinion. If you don’t have room for a big plant, don’t buy it.🤷🏻‍♀️

    Can you plant it in the ground? Or anywhere outside? Hostas in general are not house plants. As suggested before, it needs a bigger pot if you can’t plant outside in the ground.

      Hostas do do well in pots. Mine is in a large pot and is thriving. One thing, when potted vs in ground, you need to use a very different soil. One that doesn't hold onto water. So that is likely the problem here. These plants are sold with the intent of being put into the ground. The soil the store uses is not good for being in a pot. OP needs to repot with better soil ASAP.

      Yes they can when they are repotted out of the nursery container and put in a very large pot. In my experience of growing them both ways, they do better in the ground if that’s an option.

    I find that hostas are like candy to rabbits. If you plant it in ground take note of wildlife.
