Hey there friends! Apologies for posting so much-buttttt I need some assistance with this Aloe Vera plant. It’s actually my mother-in-laws plant and it’s not doing so good. Any advice? I’m looking to change the soil and keeping it in the same pot.

Don’t apologize for posting that’s what we’re all here for! And for the plant I’d say it definitely just needs some fresh soil and cleaning up of all the dead leaves. I’d also say to chop any that are half browning, that way you can harvest some of the good aloe that’s left in those piece seeing as they will continue to die. Good luck with this guy it’s definitely got potential !

I agree, just get a good well draining soil. Gritty succulent mix that doesn't have a ton of peat/sphagnum moss peat in it, as it holds too much moisture. And when you replant just make sure, what's above ground now is still above ground. If you bury any of the leaf intersections they can tend to rot. If the way it's growing is crazy you can cut the top off and replant it with some rooting powder/liquid and some Mycorrhizal. But you may want to wait till after you repot and it gets a bit healthier.

He’s dead, Jim. At least, the main plant is. You have some babies worth saving in there! Get some good cactus soil, pot up what’s healthy. Put it in a very sunny spot, and DO NOT water it for a while. My 3 foot tall Aloe gets watered every two months in cold weather, my 4-6 inch babies once a month. Let the soil get bone dry and then wait a week. Best of luck!

It might be dead but either way I think it would be your best bet to propagate from that top growth. It really depends on the condition of the stem between the soil and the top growth.

How can I propagate properly? I’m a new plant mom so I’d like to be able to do this as right as I can 🙏

You would cut the top growth above any brown stem. So just below the healthy top growth. Let The cutting dry for say 3 to 5 days and then plant it in a well draining soil mix. A cactus mix would be fine. Give it a thorough watering and then just wait. While you wait you would just water it when the soil is quite dry. Always water thoroughly and then don't water again until it's quite dry.
