Hi, So I found this beautiful Birds of Paradise thrown out in my apartment complex’s garbage room. I decided to take it home. I’m pretty much a plant noob, would love to understand what the purpose of the gap between the plastic pot and the planter. Is that a drainage area? How do I go about watering the plant with this pot? All of my other plants have drainage holes at the bottom, so I just water until water comes out of the drainage holes. Would I water the plant until water starts going into that side hole? Would love some advice! Thank you!

I think that’s a self watering pot! So you would put water in that slot and the plant would water itself (if i’m correct)

Just wanted to say to keep a close eye on it, especially the undersides of the leaves. People commonly throw away plants due to pests

Ahh I see, I was thinking it could have been due to someone moving. I thought of the possibility of pests, any advice if I happen to find any? I have pesticide because my Peace Lily had spider mites.

If the pesticide has been working then that should be fine! But if you want another option - I fill a spray bottle with 1 part isopropyl alcohol, 5 parts water, and a drop of dish soap. Spray on & under the leaves, then use a brush or paper towel to spread it across the leaf and stem. This will get rid of mealy bugs, thrips, spider mites, etc :) It can be used once a week

I would take it out of that self watering pot, put in a nursery pot with a ceramic plate under it to bottom water. Lots of light and humidity. I spray mine with neem oil and wipe the leaves.
