Scindapsus Geulis. I’m really liking the variety in the variegation patterns. I do think it’s getting a bit too much light as it’s near the top in my grow tent. Going to move it to lower light when I extend the pole to get more of marble coloring from the lower leaves vs the GOG / Aurea on the top leaves.
Is that a homemade moss pole? I just found out about these and am considering one for my pothos but not really wanting to make one from scratch 🤔
0 likes Yes, this is a DIY moss pole. I prefer making them myself for adding flexibility to custom make the poles to the size of and specs I want for the plant vs buying a premade set from Amazon or another retailer. I’ve made circular, D shaped and flat “moss wall” / totems for various plants over the years. For about $30 in materials you could make a couple dozen moss poles for the price of one 5 back from Amazon. They are super easy to make honestly. Coated galvanized wire fence from Home Depot / Lowes / Amazon + moss mix + clear plastic shelf liner + zip ties + suran wrap or clear grafting tape.
1. Cut the wire fence to the desired height and width.Pothos stems get really thick when they start to mature so you’re looking at 3-4in diameter pole. 2. Bend to shape. In general, I like D shaped poles with the flat side facing the plant vs circular poles. 3. Cut the shelf liner to the width of the D-shaped pole or half the circumference of a circular pole. This step is critical. It really helps with keeping the moss moist. 4. Add your moss mix. I use moss + coco fiber + worm castings (nutrients) with a bit of perlite or small orchid bark. Coco fiber and the worm castings help with water retention. Straight moss dries out too quickly 5. Wrap the pole from the TOP to the BOTTOM with suran wrap. Another important step. As the plant climbs you can slowly unwrap towards the top of the pole so it can root into the moss. You can also cut small holes near the aerial roots as it climbs to keep the pole wrapped. A bit more effort, but this is my preferred method 6. Attach the plant to the lowest possible point of the pole so it has the most vertical space climb. 7. Drill a hole into a water bottle and turn it upside down into the top of pole to drip feed. Keep track of how much water is required to water the pole without soaking the pot. This will be a bit of trial and error
