Hello everyone! I am new to this app, and really new to plants also. I don’t yet have any 😢 but I really want to start my plant journey! Does anyone have any suggestions on good sturdy indoor plants for a beginner? Thanks so much for any and all advice!

    • Snake plants • Philodendron • Pothos I started out by just buying random plants at the grocery store haha :) The youtube channel Sheffield Made Plants is really great for beginners!

If you’re a neglectful waterer I’d highly suggest a Zz plant too, they’re hardy and don’t require much tender love and care

Ohhh thank you!! I definitely want something that’s going to be hardy! Especially since I’m just starting out!

I have seriously neglected my spider plants and they have all survived. They’re a fun plant that grows quickly!

🤣 thank you! I was looking at possibly getting a spider plant… this made me feel like I could definitely care for it, even if I forgot to water it lol

I think they’re great beginner plants. I only water my spider plants about once a month. Their root system supports being under watered; they’re made for inconsistent waterings. My only recommendation would be to buy a more well established spider plant if you’re concerned that you may forget to water it. New baby spider plants aren’t quite ready for neglect, though they grow quickly. You’ll want a spider plant with a more established root system as a new plant parent.

pothos pothos pothos!! everyone will say it and it’s because they’re not too picky on water or sun and they grow super fast (which was so encouraging as a new plant mama!)

Thank you! Those are the kinds of plants I need! Ones that aren’t picky and will be okay if I forget to water them sometimes

All of the above plants are hardy. Syngoniums (arrowhead plants) are good beginner plants. Advice: I found I watered too much, didn’t give them enough light and was inconsistent with fertilizing when I first got my own indoor plants. I also bought plants before knowing much about them. These are not beginner’s plants. But, they are in every nursery: Calathea Ficus Orchids Diefenbachia Chinese evergreen Peace lily Croton Dracaena

My two current favorites are peperomias and jade plants. Peperomia come in a lot of beautiful variations, and are foliage plants, but act more like succulents in that they hold water in their leaves. They’re very low maintenance and very hardy, and they’re good for shadier parts of your house or a less sunny windowsill. I water mine about once every 8-9 days and have them in my north windowsills. Jades are very hardy succulents that love full sun and thrive on neglect. I have a 30 year old jade that was a cutting from my abuela’s original plant (her original is 60+ years old) and I consider them a criminally underrated and practically perfect plant, especially for beginners. Both like to be “bottom watered” (very easy, there’s tutorials on this app for it) and ones I’d definitely recommend to someone new to plants. The other recommendations I wanna give you are soil brands and where to buy plants. I exclusively use Espoma’s Organic Cactus and Succulent Soil and All-Purpose Potting Mix. Adding extra perlite to both is great if you want better drainage and are scared of overwatering your plant. As for where to buy plants, I definitely suggest buying from local plant nurseries if you can find them. Not only are you supporting a local business that way, but they’re also much more likely to be in greater condition, proper soil, and much less likely to have pests. Box stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot are semi-infamous for folks working there not being trained on what to check for in houseplants, and the plants sold there are often potted in the wrong type of soil or neglected and VERY often pest infested, as they’re typically placed right next to the automatic doors leading to the outdoor gardening section of their stores. Hope this helps! I’ll attach photos of my jades and peperomias if you’re interested

And this is my abuela’s prized 60+ jade plant. My aunt gives my family cuttings from hers and each of my abuela’s daughters have a 20-30 year old cutting so that they’d have a piece of her home in theirs.
