Hey guys , kinda new to being a plant mom. My grandma got me a plant and Planta just identified it as being a Canna Lily which is supposed to be outside. I’m in an apartment so I can’t plant it in the ground. Can I get a big rectangle planter and it still survives or no ? Thanks guys

0 Mi piaceI’m not familiar with them. Pretty sure milkweed is outdoors and ginger I’m a little less sure of but I’m still leaning toward outdoors. Doesn’t your grandmother know what it is? Where did she get it?

If this is a canna lily (I can’t immediately identify your plant), it is a perennial plant and will inevitably die, but when it does, keep the “root” chunk and you’ll be able to plant it again next year!

It is a canna lily. They’re one of my favorites. They’re meant for outdoors because they’re sun worshippers. You’re definitely gonna want to repot it in a large/deep container. I’m talking anywhere from 10”-16” if it’s a taller hybrid, and it looks like it is. They’re often grown as a thriller in a combination planter. They do spread though, so it’ll eventually fill out the pot if you plant it by itself.

It looks like a canna lily to me too, just slimmer than mine. I’m starting to think I might not see a flower this year because she’s only gotten 3-4 hours of sun a day and that’s going down fast.

0 Mi piace My canna lily has been living inside my apartment for 2.5 years and has continuously grown. There was a period in there where he was solely just surviving and I’m nursing him again through a move into a new place. They are actually tough to kill. You’ll be ok keeping yours in your apartment.
