My alocasia reginula is loosing a leaf from shipping and a new one is growing . I put it in regular soil hopefully I’m not killing it by doing so . Any input on having it in dirt?

It might just be from the journey and getting used to the new environment? They can be fussy. I have kept most of mine in the soil they have come in, but when I have repotted I have put it in a homemade blend of soil, perlite and bark so it gets aerated. Also some charcoal chips for added goodness.

I have one in mostly soil with some orchid bark mixed in for aeration. I have a couple I grew from corms in perlite/water. If it’s growing a new leaf I would say it’s fine to leave it. I only added in a repot because it was unhappy, just dropping leaves with no growth. Just keep an eye that the soil one doesn’t stay super wet for too long.

My reginula specifically really struggled until I moved her to leca, but I’ve also got alocasia in aroid mix and straight-up coir doing well. Biggest thing I’d say is that the closer you get to something like soil, the higher percentage of the pot you want to be roots. Definitely try to pot them snugly if you’re not using something that aerates easily

Oh! Also: I like to think of Alocasia leaves as being environment-specific. If I ship, buy, or substantially move an Alocasia (like moving houses) then I assume most or all of the leaves will show signs of stress or drop. As long as it’s happy and goes into a good new environment then it’s not a problem. Leave the leaves attached until they fully yellow off and it usually replaces them rapidly with new leaves that survive better in the new space. You can often get a size-up in the process, too. So right now it’s acting as expected. Just keep it snug, keep humidity up, don’t water after ~4/4:30 pm, and if you have the ability to give it some thiamine with watering then that can help. It’ll probably end up prettier anyway.
