Hello, I’m fairly new to caring for plants. I got the Raven Zz about a week ago and I noticed that it looked like roots popping out the bottom of the pot. Does this mean to repot in a bigger pot?

It’s always a good idea after the plant has acclimated to its new environment to repot with the appropriate soil.

Zzs like to be root bound so when u do repot make sure you don’t go up too much in size 🙂

I agree with all of the above and would and that a root or two coming out the bottom is not necessarily an indicator that the plant should be repotted. It could just a stray root because they will grow towards any water at the bottom of the pot. You’d need to take the root ball out and see.

I agree with all of the above and would add that ZZ roots grow from rhizomes which are like little potatoes. I only repot if I feel the sides of the nursery pot and it’s clear that the rhizomes are getting too big, trying to break free! You don’t need to do this though, only if you want your ZZ to really explode like this big, bad mamajama…

I have over 100 plants that I’ve bought and taken home. I will say, I do not repot a new plant unless it’s showing signs of stress or I am planning on growing it semi-hydro instead of with soil. Repotting causes stress the plant will need to recover from instead of putting energy towards normal growth. ZZ is a very very special plant though. They have these root systems called rhizomes that are much like a hump on a camels back. I water my ZZ less than once a month because of this. But the reason I bring up the rhizomes is you actually want to wait till those rhizomes are so big that your nursery pot starts bulging and becomes semi deformed from them expanding. The ZZ plant does not behave like other plants so you want to make sure to treat it differently. Very low watering, and be slow to repot it.

Sooo, I have a ?? I have a ZZ plant that I downsized almost a month ago bc I thought it had a fungus. I removed one of the rhizome/stem pieces bc it had what looked to be black spots on it. I left that in my garage on top of the large pot that it came from. I saw it yesterday and It is still green, and seems to want to grow! What should I do? Do I add it back to the repotted plant so it is not alone or do I pot it by itself?
