I’m assuming you want to put plants in the garden. I’m assuming it gets 6-8 hours of direct sunlight every day. If you rent: Get whatever plants catch your eye at Lowe’s or Home Depot that are in front of the building in full sun. Neon and purple sweet potato vines will fill the entire bed by themselves with little effort. You will have to dilute fertilizer and fertilize every two weeks. Water every day or every other day until the roots take. Add bark mulch to keep down weeds and hold in moisture. If you own it: 1) Expand the size of the garden. Remove the stones, the pittosporum and the Egyptian papyrus reeds. Add a steel garden edging to block the grass and to hold the soil/mulch in place. A weedwacker won’t harm a steel edging. 2) Is the papyrus blocking a red peony? Is that a gardenia with white flowers? Both plants are sought after. They may need added care to make them flourish. 3) Replace the pittosporum with a grow bag the size of a laundry basket that can grow sweet potatoes in the bottom and herbs on top. Build a simple wooden frame around the grow bag. Let the potato vines climb the post. See the diagrams for more info.

Examples of the steel edging and expanding the garden bed if you own the property. It will increase curb appeal.

Hello, I do own. I just purchased the property about 3-4 months ago and I’m hoping to make many changes to the yard and garden. I do like the idea of extending the bed to give more space and make it more visually appealing. The white is a gardenia but the red look more like a hibiscus 🌺I started removing the papyrus yesterday because it was extremely overgrown. I was thinking to do a dessert landscape as opposed to flowering plants.

I would go with the dessert landscape if your environment is suited for it. You will save water and save money by not changing out plants often. I’m in subtropical Texas gulf coast, the land of high humidity and frequent rains. 😁🪴🍀

I would clear out all or most of the lawn too. Such a pain to water and cut it. My neighbor completely removed his lawn and replaced it with award winning flowering plants. The garden show tours are always at his house on weekends. I would love a desert garden.

I live in California zone 9 so it’s perfect for dessert landscaping. I’m going to look up additional ideas to see what else would add to visual aesthetic. Thank you!

If you don’t necessarily want flowers, a philodendron gloriosum is a beautiful crawling plant that will fill out a space, or even an elephant ear Alocasia! They have big beautiful leaves and will do very well in your area 😁
