Got this 10” potted group of 4 monstera deliciosa from Publix for 30$, waited a week to repot them all into their own pots. Awful awful choice. The root ball is the entire pot and I’ve been blasting away soil for 25 minutes straight with the hose. I am determined to separate the 4 plants so that we can keep each one alive and not have one ultimately outgrow and suffocate the other 3. Last resort is going to be snipping through the root ball but does anybody have any recommendations or advice before the mosquitoes convince me to get violent?

I would hack into it honestly, they have such chunky root systems to try and separate them apart.

I’m going to give them a big tug first and if it’s not working I’ll go snipping 🫡

I like to find a root and thread it through where it goes until you get that root free and you can keep doing that. Some roots will fall off but it is ok

Just grab them by the base and try to wiggle them apart. These are literally jungle plants, they will survive a little wrangling and they will be happier separated.

I was in the same situation last fall. I ended up separating out 6 from a 10" pot. There's no way to do it without breaking some roots. It's work, but they'll be ok..

The deed has been done, no cutting was required thankfully. I was able to pull the pairs apart and then separate the pairs from there. The biggest one had 20% of the roots fall off but they all were just stealing space from the bottom of the other half of the pot so the second pair couldn’t grow anymore. I barely was able to fit the big one back into the original pot all 4 shared, it was way too much. I will have to repot the big one within a couple months and the next largest shortly after, but the smallest 2 should be fine for around a year hopefully.
