Semi hydroponics LECA… I transitionned all my plants to SH (monsteras, alocasia, spider plant, pothos). I didnt put the nutrient solution just yet because chatgpt (yes i know) said they apparently need to get used to the transition for a week first. So I Rinced my leca Boiled it Soaked it Trimmed root rot with clean cisors Let it callous 5 hours Cleaned the roots as much as possible Sprayed neem-peroxyde-water mix on the roots Filled water reservoir with ~3 cm of water Used pots with aeration and wick After all this i still got root rot 😭😭😭😭 pothos died from root rot/trasition? My alocasias too My monsteras survived but a lot of root rot 2 philodendron root rot too I am so lost as to what i did wrong 😭😭😭

I think you should have went ahead and did the nutrients for them at transition. Simply because they left behind the nutrients in the soil when you moved them to the clay pebbles that also have no nutrients in them from all the soaking as well. I am currently getting ready to switch one plant to the hydroponics set up. I purchased a plant to do a practice run first before using my plants that are flourishing. Did you allow the Lecca to soak for 24 hours before use?

I have been watching tons of you-tube videos on how to transition and one person on her channel suggested to purchase a separate plant first to try the set up!

I have moved several plants to leca. I didn’t do all those steps though. How much water did you put them in. Until they develop the proper roots, the original roots should only be in leca and not in the water. After several weeks the plants develop the proper roots for semi hydro and will grow into the nutrient water. Also the leca needs to soak in water for a couple days.

I tried this for several days. Just allowing the wick to transport the water to the leca, but it seemed the leca was drying out. So went back to the higher water level with some of the leca in the water. But you had root rot which happens from too much water. Sorry but I’m at a loss for you.

What i will do is take the leca out boil it again let it dry a bit then add a wick and see from there :(

All these small planters are in leca. It took a while. But some are doing very well, while a few of the Alocasias are their usual pain in the butt. So maybe you just over did all the prep. I just got off as much soil as possible, added leca to planter, added plant, then filled in with leca. I did use the nutrient solution from day one. I occasionally empty the outer pot and rinse the plant and leca, then add fresh nutrient solution.

I specifically purchased a hydroponic plant food from Amazon. I agree you might had your roots too far down in the water when you started out and not totally above in your Lecca. So sorry you lost so many plant babies 🙁

It sounds like you did everything right and just had bad luck! The only thing I can think of that you could even do differently is change your wick from cotton to synthetic. I cut a microfiber cleaning cloth into strips that were long enough to reach the bottom of the reservoir, and I tied the cotton wicks into knots for the cats to play with... It's worked out well so far haha.
