Hello all I received a Venus Fly Trap ad a gift. It came in this plastic container that says it’s OK to leave in. Should I repot it in one of my pots, I have terracotta, plastic and ceramic ones. Thanks for the guidance.

I have one of these Venus flytraps and what I’ve done that has been working really well is repot it in the same pot or just an inch bigger in sphagnum moss. Then, put that pot in an outer pot and keep the outer pot filled with distilled water, and place it somewhere with full sun

If individual traps start “dying” don’t panic, the plant isn’t dead, each trap has a life span of 3 closes, the plant itself is totally fine! Make sure you don’t give it any fertilizer and only water with distilled water, rain water, or reverse osmosis water

I don’t recommend terracotta pots. Over time, mineral buildup will form from the water on the pot and that can kill your plant.

I had one of those and it died when I kept it in the plastic container unfortunately.

They do best in bright direct light, lots of humidity, 80-96°F, and need to be planted in a nutrient-free airy substrate like long strain sphagnum moss. They don’t need to sit in a tray of water as long as the moss always stays damp. Rain water or distilled/RO water only, minerals from tap will crystallize the roots and kill them. The purpose of the plastic box in the store is to preserve humidity and create a greenhouse effect inside the store.

Thanks this is most helpful. I will look into getting sphagnum moss. I have well water with a filter so I’m thinking that should be OK to use.

Plastic pot and there is a fabric wrapping around the rhizome. You’ll want to take that off. It will bind the roots up.
