I need help. i have a monstera and struggle with understanding what it needs. I watered it this am and the meter says it’s dry but the tray is full of water. Is it fine? Should I be concerned?

I would double check by either poking my finger down into the soil about 2 inches and feeling for moisture or some folks prefer to use a bamboo stake. Leave the stake or chop stick in place for several minutes. When you remove it look for moist soil adhering to the stake. If your plant is truly dry, it could be root bound with very little soil to hold moisture, in which case it would need to be repotted with quite a bit of trimming of roots to use the same pot or upgrade to a larger pot. I would opt for a larger pot as you may find yourself in this situation again sooner than you want with the growing season ahead of us. I hope that was somewhat helpful. 🪴

this happened to me before. i believe my soil was hydrophobic. before that, follow Shirley’s advice and if its dry, create some air pockets and bottom feed until you can get new chunky soil for it.
3 Mi piaceWhen using the meter, you have to place the probe in more than one spot for an accurate reading and wipe it on between placements. If it is really dry, as someone mentioned, your soil may be hydrophobic. If that is the case, you could change it out or slowly start adding new soil.
4 Mi piaceI’d also test the meter on other soil to see if you get consistent results. And I’d also test the meter towards the center. The space in the planter between the wall and the soil tends to be empty as the soil pulls away from the wall, especially if it’s hydrophobic.
2 Mi piaceYou can also force it to lose hydrophobicity (if this is the issue) by submerging the entire plant in a water bath. Depending on how hydrophobic it is, you may need to force it to stay at or below the water level (use your hand to prevent it from floating). Then let it sit in the bath for a while.

i considered this but it’s risky if she just watered. because the roots can get waterlogged even though the soil isn’t wet.
