Hello all, I received a cutting of this plant a few months ago at a plant swap and just discovered that it is likely Crassula helmsii, or swamp stonecrop. It is extremely invasive in several countries. The selling this plant is banned in the UK and it is on 11 country’s Global Register of Introduced and Invasive Species. Although it is not currently an invasive species in my state or city, the previous information makes me nervous. I wouldn’t want to start anything bad if it were to somehow spread outside of its pot. Would it be irresponsible to keep this plant? Should I notify the plant swap? Any information or advice is greatly appreciated.

Just don’t plant it outside, you’re good 👌

Definitely notify the person you got it from. I would say it's okay to keep as long as it never ends up in the ground. If you think it's cute and it brings you joy, I don't see the point of getting rid of it. Inform whoever gave you the cutting, and tell them to inform anyone else who has received a cutting. there are plenty of invasives that are good houseplants, but it's your responsibility to not introduce it to your local environment and help prevent other people from doing so

I’m not sure who I got it from, they were just other plant people from my area at the plant swap. They were giving out a lot of little cuttings from their potted plant and it was a very busy swap in January, although it is a monthly event. If I keep it I will not keep it outside but I might just find a way to get rid of it safely because it makes me nervous now that I know what it is lol. Thank you!

If you want to get rid of it go for it! But, I wouldn’t get super nervous. Home Depot and other big box stores in FL sell a TON of invasive plants. I own afew too! (Responsibly ofc, and I let people know when they want a cutting) As long as you keep it contained everything is fine. Responsible plant ownership is all about care and education. Theres no real need to kill it. Think of it like keeping an exotic and mildly dangerous pet. Unlike an animal, your plant can’t escape its pot.😅 Then again if you’re in the UK, idk what your laws are. FL has a pretty frail ecosystem and I wish we had stronger environmental laws/ bigger penalties for people who damage our ecosystem. I understand why you’re nervous. 🤷‍♀️ do what makes you feel comfortable, but don’t get scared of a well potted indoor plant. Now if you sleep walk, and you’ve caught yourself planting your indoor plants outside - then I would kill it. Otherwise I think you’re ok to let it live. 😭 I wish you the best Sofia! Good luck with your plants! ❤️

Thank you so much for your response, this made me feel a lot better lol. Comparing invasive plants to a dangerous or exotic pet really helped! I’ll be sure to keep it inside
