I have two different types of cactus here but I don’t know what kinds they are! And to get roots is water or soil better?

Looks like you have a Thanksgiving/ Christmas/ Easter cactus…despite their name treat them like a tropical succulent. They need more water and humidity than a cactus. I have mine in my little outdoor greenhouse

Looks like a Thanksgiving cactus and a Christmas cactus both are jungle cacti prefer humidity and damp not soggy soil, bright indirect light, and just play some directly in the soil definitely not a water prop🌵 I have four different colors of Thanksgiving cactus in one pot I have a pink a purple a white and an orange, and then I have a whole other pot of just red Thanksgiving cactus🎉🩷 they're just so gorgeous I had Christmas cactuses probably 12 years ago and those flowers were amazing as well 🌿🏵️🥹

The one with the “spikes” is the Thanksgiving cactus and the one with the rounded edges on the leaves is the Easter cactus. They both need cactus mix, but do need to be watered a bit more often than the average cactus. I usually wait at least 12-15 days before watering mine. Make sure the soil completely dries out between waterings, and the quality of the soil is key. They need a very well-draining cactus mix to survive in soil, as they naturally live outside of soil and on trees where they’re from. I swear by Espoma’s Organic Cactus and Succulent Mix for mine. Avoid Miracle Grow’s soil, even their cactus mix, as it’s simply is not well-draining enough, even with extra amendments. If you want to turn them into fully-fledged plants a little faster, I’d recommend gently twisting each of the leaves off and propagating them the same way you have with the current branches. Then once they root, you can put all the pieces together in a small pot and let them form new shoots and branches from each leaf segment you separated. For props your size, you probably won’t see any blooms until it’s rooted in soil and matured for at least a year. You have to do some intervals of putting it in bright light and placing it in darkness to trigger the blooming process indoors. With the thanksgiving cactus, you may see blooms next year around October to November, and March to April with the Easter Cactus. Hope this helps! 😊

That looks like a Thanksgiving cactus. They are not like regular cactuses though so make sure you read up on what kind of soil they like and how much watering they prefer. They are kind of similar to orchids and grow on the sides of trees.

This helped me to know what I have. I actually took a piece off of a plant that was on my stepdaughter’s plant. That was dead on the patio for two months. I propagated it in water and it thrived and now I have a very huge beautiful plant. I did eventually put it into a soil. Open up the picture cause then you can see all of the type of leaves.
